Religious background
My background is Catholic. I value the ritual, mystery and love that is at the heart of this tradition, as well as the inspiring mystics, teachers, social justice activists and progressive social teachings which have all helped to form and inform my life.
Today I would describe myself as on ‘the edge of the inside’ of institutional church.
Rather than a specific denominational focus, my orientation these days is to support reclaiming the contemplative path, primarily in the Christian tradition as it is the one I am most familiar with.
Approach to spiritual direction
I see spiritual companioning as a form of contemplative practice, during which I try to meet people where they are at. When I work with a new person, I may explore the various ‘gateways’ she or he uses to connect with the wonder, awe and mystery of life, or what some of us may choose to call ‘God’. Then I work to expand and open these gateways by sharing readings, resources and practices, to support a deeper awareness of and connection with Life, with God….
I have been deeply influenced by my contemplative practice of centering prayer, as well as many poets.
- My journey has led me to become one of the founding members of the Contemplative Network Aotearoa which aims to support seekers who are exploring the Christian contemplative path.
- In 2021 I completed studies with the Center for Action and Contemplation This has helped me to integrate a contemplative and non-dual approach to life.
In 2022 I was appointed to the Board of Spiritual Directors International (SDI) which is an inter-faith and inter-spiritual organisation. I value the breadth and inter-spiritual orientation of SDI as well as the opportunities for ongoing training in spiritual direction it offers.
I am currently employed part-time as spiritual care coordinator at my local hospice and am privileged to accompany people and families as they navigate end of life journeys.
So in my spiritual companioning practice I draw from all these sources and other life experiences to be as fully present as I am able. Thank you for your curiosity and for reading these words!
