Marion Fairbrass Spiritual DirectorMarion Fairbrass on the zipline

Religious background

I have grown in faith and relationship with God through a variety of Christian affiliations. I grew up in a christian family, worshipping at a Baptist Church. There I learnt to speak about my faith and to read and memorise scripture. I became involved in the Charismatic Renewal from which I learn the power and gentleness of Holy Spirit. I was confirmed in the Anglican Church, and in a charismatic-anglo-catholic setting sensed the grandeur and greatness of God. I value all I have experienced with and learnt from those who have journeyed with me through the years.

I have been a professed member of the Third Order, Society of St Francis for over thirty years. My journey to and in the Order has shaped my growth. It is also instrumental in keeping me honest, accountable and committed to “life-long formation”.

Approach to spiritual direction

The Spiritual Direction Session is a time when the directee has control of the agenda. They are free to bring any topic that they wish or need to talk about. My role is to listen, reflect back what I am hearing and ask questions to help them reflect on what they are saying. I intentionally listen to them and to Holy Spirit, asking for guidance in how I am to respond.

The question “Where is God in this?” is uppermost.

Attending my own Spiritual Direction sessions has been so important in my life My heart’s desire is to be able to offer the same support to others that I have received. It is a huge privilege to journey with another as they seek to draw closer to our loving God.

One of the joys of my life is friendship with people across a wide range of ages. I enjoy sharing my life, receiving and giving support, with friends who are in their mid 20s across all ages to my own age group.  One of my younger friends accompanied me when I wanted to step out of the box and do something new and challenging – like trying the zipline in Christchurch
