Helen-Gray Spiritual DirectorForest Path

Religious background

My relationship with God has developed since childhood through experience in Methodist, Presbyterian, Anglican and Catholic contexts, plus times of no church involvement. What I have valued in my faith communities are inspirational preaching, music and genuine caring relationships.

Various practices have contributed greatly to my spiritual growth, for example, reading scripture, contemplative prayer, spiritual direction, journalling, retreats, Taize chants and pilgrimage.

I have at different periods of my life lead worship and Bible study groups, ran youth and children’s programmes, and facilitated retreat days. But spiritual direction is the ministry in which I feel most at home.

Approach to spiritual direction

Spiritual direction has been hugely formative for me, and I feel privileged to be able to offer it to others. I provide a warm and relaxed space marked by respect and perceptive listening. My prayer is that I can help someone to open to the Infinite Love that indwells us all, and to find unique responses to that Love. I might use scripture and other wisdom writing, images, poetry, silence, creative expression, movement and drawing.

I work as a counsellor and supervisor as well as a spiritual director – though I prefer to think of myself as a spiritual ‘companion’ rather than a ‘director’. My approach is person-centered and collaborative; I see myself as sitting alongside another, helping them listen to and explore what is going on in their interior world. I believe that something fresh and vital is created each session as two people become present and listen – listen to self, to each other, and to God.
