Religious background
I was brought up in the Presbyterian tradition in New Zealand and have throughout my life lived and worshipped in Canada, Scotland, England, the Sultanate of Oman and now am living back in Taranaki, New Zealand. My experiences living and working in all of these countries encouraged and enabled growth with a deepening awareness of God in the everyday of my life.
Always committed and actively involved in the church community has seen me working with both the young and the old, leading worship at Sunday services, guiding bible study groups, singing in church choirs which I love and offering pastoral support. In the past fifteen years I have sought a more contemplative life completing the Spiritual Growth Foundation programme and more recently the Supervision programme with Spiritual Growth Ministries. I am the Administrator for the Taranaki Group of Spiritual Directors. I very much enjoy regularly facilitating quiet mornings and retreats in Taranaki alongside offering individual spiritual direction and supervision
I am a lay minister in the Anglican tradition currently leading and worshipping in a Methodist, Presbyterian, Anglican Cooperative Parish.
My career in health and education has given me skills, knowledge and experience all of which contribute to my Spiritual Direction and Supervision
Approach to spiritual direction
Spiritual direction is offering to be a spiritual companion or guide as a person experiences the presence of God in their everyday lives by:
- Creating a sacred space being honest and open to all that a directee may bring to the session.
- Walking quietly and gently beside them
- Listening with intent to what is on the surface and what may be laying behind.
- Assisting to explore elements of life with empathy and respect, without judgement.
- Helping to notice who and where God is in their journey.
- Increasing an awareness of the love and grace given to each of us by God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
- Supporting someone to examine the past and the present to move forward whilst valuing all diversity, culture and ethnicity.
It is a privilege to accompany others on their spiritual journey and a joy to see the ongoing growth in faith and a deepening of their spirituality of all directees, retreatants and those whom I supervise. All conversations are confidential.
