I love to offer a variety of creative practices within Spiritual Direction, both one-on-one and in small groups. I'm continually amazed at how God meets people when enagaging our senses creatively, especially through touch, visually and by listening.

I see myself as an accompanying person alongside another discovering the presence, voice and discernment of God; what God may be saying through circumstances, personal history, relationships. We are holistic people, physical, emotional and spiritual and I work with all these aspects of a person's life to increase awareness and a sense of God's presence and working. Metaphorically I am companion gardener, with you and the Greatest Gardener, uncovering clearing sowing and reaping, pondering and wondering, waiting and being.

he hope I hold out for those I companion spiritually is that a spacious enough place will be created that the presence of God is sensed. I also hold a particular desire to walk alongside ( virtually) people who are working in an overseas context, so they are supported to maintain their spiritual vitality in that setting. Much of what I experienced overseas through mission life has led me to want to have a specialised knowledge of trauma, and I am still exploring the ways our spirituality helps in recovery from trauma.

Spiritual Direction is a space for you to listen to your authentic self. To be seen and heard. To notice the movement of God within your daily life, the highs and lows and the spaces in-between. I love the imagery of the nest. Where the three of us gather, you and me and the Spirit of God. Here we take pause from the busyness of life, we breathe and rest and listen together. It is a safe space where all are welcome, there is no judgment here. It is a privilege to be with you on this pilgrimage of discovery and grace, with God as our guide.

Jenny McDowall Spiritual Director
I am a fairly new spiritual director in the contemplative tradition. My approach is to sit with you and walk with you on your spiritual journey, asking questions to help you clarify things, deepen experiences and see where God is at work in your own life. I love the metaphor of a midwife – being the one who helps bring birth to something new. I like to connect with God through nature myself and this is something I foster. We have a large garden which is in the process of being developed as a Quiet Garden – a place where people can spend time being still, connecting with God, letting go of stress and listening. In the future it will be open for structured quiet days as well as for personal retreat times. I am happy to work with directees over Zoom (though face to face is my preference!) especially with those in the mission space.

I like the description Midwife to the Soul. Accompanying another on their spiritual journey is a very old tradition and have found it very vital in my own journey.

I see offering Spiritual Direction as a privilege. An offering of hospitality - providing time and a welcoming space. A listening, non-judgmental heart and a co-discerning spirit. Celebrating, challenging and cheering you on, as you journey with God on your unique path, and as you craft out a life of balance between full-on everyday living and quiet reflective stillness in your inner chapel. Lately, God has also brought about the fulfilment of a desire He has placed in my heart to provide a Quiet Space for people hungry for a time away with Him. A time of Reflection and Rest.

I prefer to use the term Companion as I believe I am accompanying a person on their spiritual journey. I like to listen to the person - allow them to 'tell their story' and encouraging them to trust their own personal experiences - reflect upon their experiences and 'seeing' how God is present in the ordinary and sometimes extraordinary daily events of life. I have been trained through the Spiritual Growth Ministry and have been a Spiritual Director for 15 Years.

For me spiritual direction/companioning is a place of freedom to notice, share and reflect on life. Anything and everything may be brought to spiritual direction. It is a place to linger with God and with ourselves, in a spirit of curiosity and openness. It’s a place to love questions and engage with them, to wonder and explore. It’s a safe space of deep listening, attentiveness and trust, where both light and dark, joy and struggle, love and fear – all the paradoxes of life – may find expression.

We now run a small retreat centre on a 10 acre farmlet in Cooptown hosting individuals, families and groups. If you need a break, to enjoy some country air with ready access to the beauty of the Peninsula, we may be able to provide you with a space to do that.
