Spiritual 'direction' is accompanying people on their life and faith journeys, helping them listen and watch for 'glimpses' of God's presence in their lives. Some people come to spiritual direction when they are in one of life's many transitions - growth, change, loss, questioning. I love it when people come with lots of questions!
My first role as a spiritual director/companion is to listen: to listen to each person, to hear their stories of joys and sorrows and longings, and to help them discern the sometimes quiet and hidden voice of God within. I encourage 'directees' in whatever ways of prayer best help them spend time in, become aware of, and open themselves to God's presence.
Each person brings unique and precious experience of life and God to spiritual direction sessions. Whether conversation is about relationships, family, study, career, change, church, ministry, health, loss, aging, prayer, or who or where or if God is - spiritual direction touches on the whole of life, including the unfathomable beauty, goodness and mystery we call God.
The people whom I accompany come from many backgrounds, ethnicities and denominations - Methodist, Anglican, Presbyterian, Evangelical, Baptist, and Catholic - all are most welcome.

Often when we begin, or when we are on our spiritual journey, we come across an ‘intersection of uncertainty’ - not knowing which way to turn, feeling the need for meaningful guidance. My sense is spiritual direction is, by its’ nature, a supporting guide on our pilgrimage to knowing and growing our spiritual selves. In spiritual direction you will find yourself chaperoned by a director and guided by the spirit of Love. There is deep listening, prayer, parables, dreamwork, enneagram and discernment in this sacred container. And, overtime, awareness of self and spirit develops; telling markers, symbols and associations announce their place, their nurturing value in your spiritual formation. Your uncertainty of which way to turn gains clarity, all the while moving you farther along on your spiritual journey. Slowly, and assuredly your meaningful relationship with God unfolds……. and it is good.

I love Eugene Peterson's description of a spiritual director as
'someone who will show up, and shut up - just to be there, an honest, prayerful presence with no responsibility to be anything other than what you have become in your obedient lifetime'.
I am probably better at showing up, than in shutting up, but I do seek to be the prayerful presence that listens with attention and intention to God, and the other, and find - in our conversation - that God is indeed at work.

I came to spiritual direction in my later years after working as a psychologist for 30 years and after some difficulties in defining the boundaries between the two disciplines I have come to a place where they inform each other and blend well.
The role of companioning someone on their journey into the Loving Mystery of God is a privilege. Visual symbols are important to me, that I offer by way of 'having out' in my Spiritual Direction Space for the Directee's visit that they may or may not pay attention to. The Spiritual Director's role, as I see it, is to help the one who comes for direction to notice where God is present in their own life and the life of others.
In Spiritual Direction I try to discern the Spirit whispers occurring and to help the one with me to hear those whispers and direct invitations for themselves.

I am not hierarchical and see myself as an experienced spiritual companion who would accompany you on your spiritual growth journey. I approach it with a non-judgmental strength based focus. My background has been in educational leadership and the dimension I find easiest to work with is the mind rather than the heart. However, connection with the heart is an aspect of my growth. I am well read and I am happy to work across cultures and across ages. My secondary school background means that I am very keen to connect with young people. I wished I had a spiritual director 20 years earlier. God at the centre, humour and family are very important to me. Years ago, I was struck by the thought that God has all the time in the world for me, that I’m never tiresome or boring, but instead a delight to be with. In spiritual direction I seek to show that sort of generosity to someone coming to me. I want to hear the stories of others and together with them probe where God might be at work in those stories. It’s usually through the narratives of work, relationships and life in general, but it may also be through exploring a dream, or perhaps what seem to be barren landscapes. That has been my experience in receiving spiritual direction, and I enjoy giving others the opportunity to share too. I believe that nothing is beyond the realm of God’s interest, so anything can be brought to our session and aired.

It is a privilege to hold a space for another to explore their life and discern together where the Spirit is at work. As I sit with another, we are at an oasis, sharing the life-giving water. Sometimes it feels like dry desert times, difficult dark times or easy joyous times. All are welcome and held as sacred offerings and invitations into the Divine.
Working at Peacemakers Retreat Center we naturally engage with nature through the paddocks, the trees, the animals and birdsong. There is also the option of walking in the Rongoa or the Labyrinth, creating a wholistic experience, allowing God to speak through the land.
